Hotel Review: Ibis Augsburg Koenigsplatz, Augsburg, Germany

Posted by

Visiting Augsburg, Germany and looking a not too expensive stay? If you, in addition, value good breakfast with fresh waffles Ibis Augsburg Koeningsplatz could be a good place to stay for you.

Location

Location ★★★★★★★★★☆

This hotel is located in about 1 mile (1-2km) from downtown Augsburg. There was plenty of parking space in front of the hotel. They also had own indoor parking hall, but because the street parking was free during the night we decided to use it.

You could have easily walked to downtown but using a car is also a good way to move around. Augsburg is a quite small town so going around is easy and distances are quite small.

Hotel and Services

Cleanliness ★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆

Welcome Greeting ★★★★★★★★☆☆

I was positively surprised by the service quality and breakfast in the restaurant of this hotel.

The front desk staff was friendly and spoke good English (in Germany that isn’t as common as you might assume). They were also very polite and friendly.

Unfortunately, I was so hungry that I forgot to take a photo of the breakfast but it was nice traditional German breakfast with bread, waffles (self-made, yum!), jam, fruits, yoghurt, some warm dishes and different drink options. The breakfast is served 6.30-10am and it was included in our stay.

The room had a bed, table and an ensuite bathroom. Nothing very luxurious – but that’s what Ibis is, low price and okay quality.

For me there is though one requirement: I want my room to be clean. This was our only disappointment during our road trip. There wasn’t any visible dirt in bed or table bath in bathroom there was a) stain in a towel (yuk but understandable, I’m sure the towel was though washed but the stain was stuck in it), b) there was someone’s hair in the shower floor (yuk, yuk, and yuk! Yes, we can wash this away with water but this is definitely something the cleaning staff should have taken care before we arrived).

Other notes

Ibis is part of Le Club Accor Hotels if you want to collect points, book your stay via their own website (not booking, hotels.com etc!)

Did you know that Germany is actually a quite cheap country for travelers? In this hotel big class of Red wine (two choices, glasses were huge, like 24cl) were 4€ ($4.5), also big beer (like 0.5l) was only 4€ ($4.5) from the hotel bar. In contrast, these same drinks in Finland or Switzerland would be 10-15€ per class.

Overall

Overall ★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

There were two lacks in cleanliness. Having clean room is something I personally value a lot. Thus I would not probably come back to this hotel. However, I already miss the waffles from their breakfast. This hotel also had very friendly service and good location paired with a low price.

    1. Those waffles were a great surprise that really made my morning. 🙂 In Augsburg there really wasn’t much hotels to choose from so I guess this one was just fine.

  1. Aewwwwwwwwrgh, I would have gone nuts if I had found someone’s hair from my hotel room’s bathroom. Makes me wonder what else they don’t clean… 😬 otherwise, sounds like this was in a great location!

    1. Yep! I usually stay in nice hotels and the first time Ibis didn’t really make me wanna go again. 😅 The location, staff and breakfast were good but cleanliness is just so important that you cannot underestimate it.

  2. I love your notes and honesty (especially about the hair thing…that’s gross). It looks like a pretty cute spot and who can resist a good breakfast? I love all these places you experience…they are my trip aspirations!

    1. Thanks Kari! I’m happy to hear you enjoy my posts. 🙂 I always try to be honest with my reviews. There was a lot of good things in this hotel but the lack of cleanliness is something sad really. I mean, if the hotel is clean and cozy that already makes it nice and everything else a plus really. But well, there wasn’t much options in Augsburg.

  3. Great and honest review Nora! Cleanliness is essential to any hotel and I always read reviews about this before I make the reservation. But in general, this hotel looks great and affordable.

    1. I always check TripAdvisor and reviews too before booking! What comes to Augsburg though there wasn’t much options (and I might have read to reviews too fast because I didn’t see others complaining about cleanliness). I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the review, Helene. 🙂

  4. Yeah, when you’re at a simple hotel without all the deluxe amenities you at least want the room to be spotless. Sounds like the breakfast helped make up for it a little. 😉 That’s interesting that drink prices are so much cheaper in Germany than Finland/Switzerland. Germany has a reputation amongst backpackers that “the beer is cheaper than water” and I guess that’s not that far off. LOL

    1. Haha that’s probably true actually! In Finland instead we have all crazy extra taxes for things potentially harmful for you – so the goverment adds some extra to things like gas (harmful for the environment), alcohol (bad for you) and sugar (bad for you). And in general the taxation here is quite insane – like with car we pay taxes of taxes. 😅 So, Finland is a pretty expensive country.
