Bordering the Arabian Peninsula to its south, the cultural lands of Europe to its west, the Black Sea up north and the Soviet era states to its east, Turkey is a mix of traditions and cultures. When one visits, it is impossible to not be fascinated by the sheer beauty of its balloon filled skies and the rich histories of the Byzantine, Greek and Ottoman Empires that flavor the Turkish lands below. It should be true then, when Alphonse de Lamartine said, “If one had but a single glance to gaze the world, one should gaze on Istanbul.” In this article, we will give you a small but important guide to a number of things which you shouldn’t miss out in Turkey.

 

6 Things That You Must Do in Turkey

 

1. Cappadocia

Located in central Anatolia, Cappadocia is a photographer’s dream. Formed over thousands of years of wind and water action, Cappadocia is home to beautiful rock hills and is part of the Gerome National Park of Turkey. While trekking is the best way to explore this great place, you may also take a hot air balloon ride and end up with a not at all disappointing bird’s eye – view.

 

2. Aya Sofya

Aya Sofya or Hagia Sofia is Turkey’s most visited museum. Reflecting the might of the Byzantine and the Greek Empires, this building is one of the most beautiful in the world. After 916 years of being used as a church, it’s minarets were added by the Ottoman rulers of Istanbul and the building was turned into a mosque. 3. Ephesus

Located in the Izmir province of modern day Turkey, Ephesus was one of the most important cities of the bygone Roman Empire. It was built in the 10th century BCE by Attic and Ionic Roman Greek colonists. Today in ruins, this majestic city once held important grand monuments of the Roman Imperial Period, such as The Great Theatre and the Library of Celsus. Walk along the ruins and you are exposed to an era of the past, to a life which the Romans lived.

 

4. Cruising the Mediterranean

Turkey’s beautiful Mediterranean coastline is lined with ruins that soak up years of history. For most people, cruising the Mediterranean is about hiring a yacht and sailing along on crystal blue waters. For visitors to Bodrum (take a look at property for sale Bodrum) and Fethiye, taking a yacht is mostly a priority. Slopes on both sides of the coastline give way to white sand beaches. The “Blue Cruise” is one of the most famous cruises on the Mediterannean, originating in Fethiye and sailing till Olympus.

 

5. Pergamum

Turkey is the place to go to for Greco – Roman historical architecture. However, none of them are as good as Pergamum. It was once the home to some of the most important Greek libraries. In the present day, this place is located in Bergama, with the temple ruins perched on a hilltop and an amphitheater cut out in rock. This place, which was home to gladiator wars, is now a popular draw for international tourists.

 

6. Cuisine

If you’re in Turkey, you have got to taste Turkish food. While this transcontinental nation is a boiling pot of ancient cultures, its cuisine is derived from them too! Lamb is the basic meat of the Turks. Speaking of best dishes, the Turkish kebab comes out on top – meat on a skewer grilled over a charcoal fire. Turkish people also have a wide diversity of vegetables and delicious desserts. You should treat your taste buds to all of them!

 

Turkey is a marvelous land. Rich in everything from cuisine to culture, it is very appealing to everyone. There’s always something that Turkey has to offer.
