Hostel Review: Nyon Hostel, Nyon, Switzerland

Wanting to explore Geneva without paying too much for hotels in downtown? Check out Nyon Hostel! It’s located in 30 minutes from Geneva and doesn’t cost hundreds per night! Nyon Hostel, irrespective of it’s name, is really cozy, offers you your own room if you want and also serves breakfast. I’d rather call this a two to three star hotel located in cute little town called Nyon.

Location ★★★★★★★★★☆

Nyon hostel is located in Nyon, Switzerland which is around 30 minutes away from Geneva. Nyon itself is a small town where isn’t that much to see. Anyhow, it’s so close to Geneva and other towns in Switzerland that you can easily explore from there.

With a car or taxi it’s 30 minutes from Geneva to Nyon which is not too bad. Anyhow, that taxi drive costs over 90€ ($100) so you probably don’t want to pay that everyday. Instead, rent a car or commute with local trains.

In Nyon hostel the parking is 8€ ($9) per day. And walk to train station is around 15 minutes. The train to Geneva takes around 15 minutes and costs around 8€ ($10).

Welcome Greeting ★★★★★★★★★☆

The hostel has reception from 7am to midnight. The staff was friendly and helpful, so compared to the fact that this isn’t a hotel that’s pretty great.

Irrespective of the fact that this is a hostel they still serve you breakfast. I think the breakfast wasn’t special, just toast, muesli, coffee and juice available but since I didn’t wait for having any free food in hostel this was pretty good. Don’t wait for luxuries but at least you have something to eat and drink.

There is also complimentary WiFi for the guests and breakfast everyday from 7-9am. Nothing special like spa or gym but well, I think most hostels do not offer those luxuries.

We had a double room with a balcony. Our room was huge. It included two beds, tables, two chairs and a tv. There was also a relatively big balcony, own shower and own bathroom. In the bathroom there were some shower gel and hairdryer available.

From our balcony the view was amazing. It’s crazy to see those snowy mountains from your window every morning. That’s something you never explore in Finland. It was something very beautiful and special for us. Mountains are basically present everywhere you go in Switzerland, it’s such a wonderful country with some stunning nature!

I think this room type offers good value for money. In this hostel there are also shared rooms and bigger own rooms available. We didn’t see those but if the reviews in TripAdvisor are correct those should be nice as well.

Above waiting train to Geneva, the ticket cost 9.00 CHF

There are two grocery stores called Coop nearby. They offer really good quality food and snacks. There are also some restaurants and small stores available in Nyon. In addition to exploring Geneva, take one to two days for exploring Nyon, it’s very cute and beautiful small town.

The train to Geneva or Geneva airport works really well, is clean and safe and operates multiple times every hour. So if you don’t have a huge amount of stuff with you prefer train if you want to save some money for other things.

Overall ★★★★★★★★★☆

The fact I’m usually not a hostel kind of person made reviewing a bit hard for me since I can mostly compare this place to hotels in which I’ve stayed. Anyhow, I really think this place is good value for money. Clean, cozy, great staff and good location. And of course free wi-fi and breakfast are also great. Only thing I would have added would been getting a fridge to the room, however, during wintertime you can store your snacks at the balcony so this wasn’t a big issue for us.

Do you prefer staying in hotels or hostels? Do you prefer hotels in downtown or commuting from somewhere near?

  1. I don’t mind staying in hostels if they have double rooms but I wouldn’t sleep in a dormitory type room anymore… And I do agree with you, this looks more like a hotel than a hostel.

    1. I’m not a dorm kind of person either. I enjoy sleeping well and not worrying about my stuff. This one though was a nice experience. 🙂

  2. That has actually got to be one of the nicest hostels that I have seen and not only is good value for money but I also like that they give you breakfast which as you said most hostels do not. And free wifi is a must for any location stay. Where are you planning to travel to next?

    1. I know! When I saw photos from here in booking site, I first thought this is either actually hotel or that the photos are fake. But nope, this is a hostel with breakfast and nice rooms! Next I’m going to travel to Norway for business. After that I’ll go to a honeymoon during which we’ll explore Asia. What are your plans, Ana?

  3. I can basically stay anywhere where I feel safe, it’s clean & I’ve got my own room to sleep in haha. Though, now when the baby has come along it’s more important to think carefully about where to stay etc, so I’d choose a lovely Airbnb or a hotel for the stay 🙂

    1. Good points! Being safe and having a clean room are very important points! I also value having internet connection and a room that’s not too noisy during nighttime.

    1. That’s a really good question, Kari! For me offering a room service and breakfast has usually meant hotel, and if having dorm rooms has been only for hostels. However, this one offers breakfast and you can be snacks from the reception, we also had own room. This place called itself Hostel so I guess this is a hostel but probably this actually is somewhere in between 🤔

  4. This hostel looks pretty nice. It’s like a hotel actually. I don’t mind staying in hostels at all, as long as everything looks clean and professional. Sometimes there is no big difference between hotel and hostel, only price. 🙂

    1. Yep! This one was significantly cheaper than hotels in downtown Geneva and at the same time nicer than hostels in the downtown. So, good value for money but still nice and clean. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Zana!

  5. Your accomodation seems good for value!
We stay in different types of lodgings when we travel: hotel, AirBnB, apartment etc. This is to keep costs down when it’s in an expensive city and to experience luxury when in an expensive town.

    1. Good point! The cost of living of the city you’re visiting is important to know when booking accommodation. We usually prefer hotels but since Switzerland is quite expensive hostels seemed to be better choice. We haven’t yet tried booking and AirBnB but we definitely should try that!

  7. I don’t mind staying in hostels a well, though the commuting part depends on how long I will stay in a city, if it’s for a quite a short time I rather not waste half an hour of my life! well half 30 minutes is not that bad!
