How and Why to Grow Your Own Herbs?

Posted by

This year we decided to grow some herbs on our balcony. Herbs are great because they are both beautiful and eatable. They also smell great and are healthy.

What You Need to Grow Own Herbs?

1. Pots

The pots should be around 2-3 times bigger than the ones in which your herbs come from the store. Choose anything you find beautiful! I chose handmade 3D lace style printed white ones that I find absolutely gorgeous.

2. Herbs

I guess this is an obvious one? Haha! But yes choose the herbs you want to grow. You can chose them with couple different ways: a) take ones you want to use, b) buy ones you think look the best if they’re more for decoration than eating or c) choose the ones that will grow the easiest in your place.

Of course you can combine some of those ways. I choose to begin with some thyme, basil and oregano. Mostly because I like eating all of those but they’re also beautiful and quite easy to grow.

3. Mold

You’ll need some herb mold to fill the pots. This is a must so that the herbs can grow their roots and themselves in general. If possible choose mold that’s designed for herbs. Ask for instructions for a herb and flower salesperson if there isn’t anything specifically planned for herbs.

4. (Organic) Herb Fertilizer

This is not a must but a good herb fertilizer will sure help to grow your herbs big and beautiful. We bought some natural herb fertilizer for our herbs.

5. Gloves, Spoon, Watering Can

You can do everything mentioned below without gloves but then it’s gonna be quite a bit of hand washing and cleaning under your finger nails afterwards. I recommend the glove option. If you have actual garden clothes that’s great! If you don’t you can do what I did and use regular kitchen gloves.

You also might want to use a spoon for applying the mold to the pots. Additionally, it’s good to have a watering can for moisturizing the mold.

How to Start?

  1. Buy everything mentioned above

  1. Clean space where to set everything up (Bathroom / Balcony for example)

  1. Put the gloves on if you want to use them

  1. Give some water to the herbs, you can also give some fertilizer if you want to use some. Check out instructions from the fertilizer package. Ours should be added once a week.

  1. Clean up, place the herbs where you want them and enjoy. 🙂

+ You can grow the herbs indoors or outdoors. However, keep in mind that they don’t survive if it goes below 0°C (32F)

I hope you enjoyed the post! And please forgive me the photo quality, shooting photos with one hand in a darkish bathroom isn’t the easiest thing to do haha!

Have you ever grown herbs? Would you like to try? Why or why not?

    1. Thank you for your nice comment Samantha! 🙂 I’d love to have couple more herbs, maybe mint and parsley could be nice additions to my little herb garden (which is still indoors because I am not quite sure how cold it will be outdoors in near future here), I’m planning to move my herbs to our balcony at some point. 🙂 I’m clad you liked the post!

    1. That’s true! 🙂 My grandma too is having all kinds of vegetables and herbs in her garden. Grannies are always like plant whispers – they seem to know how to take perfect care of all kinds of plants. 😀

  1. My dad grows his own herbs and I love it since we get to just take them from our garden. Thank you for sharing this post. I think growing our own food, including herbs, can actually contribute to less waste!

    1. I’m sure that’s true! Buying herbs weekly from the grocery store sure isn’t very ecological because all those herbs are packed in some plastic and they have traveled a long way to the store. Thank you for mentioning that point of view Bethanny! 🙂
