Having an excellent camera is crucial for blogging. To make your readers come back your content has to be high quality. To create some excellent content you need some writing and photographing skills and a good camera. When you’re starting a blog or updating the existing one you might want a new camera to boost your motivation.
Nowadays the best smartphones have excellent cameras that are suitable for basic photos for blog. As long as lighting is good (read: you’re shooting in daylight) and the target is not too challenging my iPhone can do excellent job. However using an SLR gives you more flexibility and you can make stunning photos anywhere, anytime.
For last seven years I’ve been shooting with my Canon EOS 550D (similar series to 700D). It’s an excellent partner for a blogger. It’s valuably priced and does mostly very good job. For blogging you don’t need extremely high resolutions because you’re readers will anyway be mostly using their mobiles or laptops anyway.
However if you are also taking photos that are supposed to be printed an SLR is a must. My old one was doing just fine but after a few years of thinking I decided to update to full frame SLR, Canon EOS 6D. This camera offers you higher resolution (excellent if you need to edit or crop the photos) but more importantly it’s doing better in extreme conditions like low light or rain (yep, it’s waterproof (if your lens is too)!).
I’m super exited to this addition to my family: it makes awesome photos, it’s not too heavy and it was the most affordably priced for my purposes (I’m not shooting a lot of video but I want to have print quality photos).
The timing for getting this new camera was quite excellent because I bought it right before starting this blog’s extreme makeover. Getting something new for blogging always offers some additional inspiration and motivates. I’ve been taking a lot more photos since getting this new camera!
Photos taken with my new Canon EOS 6D + Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens:
I love how to silver glitter ball looks nice and sharp and everything else is soft and slighly blurry in this one. 🙂 f/2.8, 1/500,
I read that 6D doesn’t have to the best color (and that I should by Canon 5D Mark 3) but I think the color is good enough. Cannot stop loving the colors of this VS Sunrise package. f 1.8, 1/4000
I love the color, contrast and everything. These are lanterns from our balcony. Nothing super special but my new Canon really makes them look interesting. f 1.8, 1/4000
Playing with closeups with 1.8 and 2.8 f-stops is so fun! I love doing those soft backgrounds 🙂 f/2.8, 1/2000
I love this photo! The camera and the lens together created a beautiful bokeh (blurry soft background), also the auto focus did good work finding these little tree branches. f/1.8, 1/4000
What camera(s) do you use for blogging? What would be your dream one?

The one thing though about SLRs is chore of carrying it around for us…lol. We are lazy folks who just want to whisk out the phone and snap!

Haha! Sometimes phones are so much handier. Personally I prefer having a good SLR and phone with good camera. Then there is possibility to excellent photos (after some carrying around) or good photos with less effort. 🙂

I’m currently using my Xperia phone, but I’m trying to save for a mirroless camera to level up my blogging /vlogging as well. This is a good choice, I must add this on my list.

Oh wow, this is absolutely gorgeous. My camera works fine in day light, but I don’t have a good lens for rainy days or darkness (or darker places). The photo’s in darker times of the day gets grey-ish. I don’t like that. Your photo’s are really great with the blurred background. Maybe I should safe some money for this camera, what is the price of this camera?

If you want good photos in darkness you should definitely consider full-frame SLR with lens that has f/1.8 or lower (that f number symbolizes two things 1) how well it does in darkness and 2) how much it can blur the background).
This camera body was about 1500€ ($1600), the lens I have actually isn’t waterproof and was only 180€ ($200). If you want it to be completely water resistant consider Canon L-series, similar from there would be around 1000€ ($1100). My lens was a lot more valuable and it takes as good photos so I thought that I can take the risk of breaking that. The body instead is water resistant. 🙂

In the last few weeks, I have been looking into a camera for my blog. I have heard the Cannon 60D is great for beauty shots and ‘selfies’ too which would be perfect for my blog. Is this camera great at face shots too?
LikeLike
With 60D you can turn the screen to side and see yourself. In 6D screen is fixed. You can though connect this one with Wi-Fi to your phone and see the photo from it. However if you want to shoot selfies in places where is no Wi-Fi 60D is better choice even though 6D has some other advantages. 🙂

Wonderful pictures! & I agree, good camera is definitely crucial!
I’ve got two cameras, Canon EOS1100D & Olympus Pen EPl-7. Canon is absolutely wonderful, but I carry around Olympus for the most of the times because of its size haha 😀

I feel you! But I’m actually happy to say that my EOS 6D + Canon 50mm f/1.8 is a smaller set than my old 550D + 18-50mm lens haha! 🙂 Obviously I’m though not carrying Canon around all the time, I’ll still be using my iPhone too but when shooting things at home or going out to take photos good SLR is a great thing to have! 🙂

I have been thinking of getting a new camera for days now because I sold my Nikon and settled for a Sony mirrorless camera which I regret! Lately, I’ve just been using my iPhone 7+ and it’s working better for me than my Sony mirrorless cam. Glad to have read this post since I don’t usually print my photos, I’ll just hold off in getting a new cam. 🙂

iPhone 7+ has excellent camera(s) to be just a phone! It’s actually better than some older SLRs are. Sony does some okay cameras but I’ve been a Canon girl since 6th grade and I still love them. 🙂

Yes! You first need basic skills for composition, lighting, etc. Without those no camera can make you a photographer.

Congratulations on having a new camera. No matter what the camera is so long as one has the skill that’s what really matters. So yes, you were able to take beautiful photos because you’re also equipped with the skills. Anyway, as to your questions, I use a mirrorless camera Fuji-Film X- A2 as it also has manual controls and it isn’t bulky. When I forget my camera behind, I use iPhone 7.

It’s good to have a light camera with manuals. That could be next addition to my family too (or I just change to iPhone 7+ at some point, 7 series iPhones have amazing cameras)! 🙂 Thanks for your comment and kind words and welcome back.

Those are great photos. I use a FujiFilm finepix which is not really up to the job as my photos look amateurish compared to yours. I would love a decent SLR and to lean to take better pictures but all comes back to lack of time and money. Great post btw.

Clad you enjoyed the post and photos! 🙂 Well, we all have to begin with some equipment. It’s good to first learn basics of color, light, composition, etc. and after knowing all the basics you can reward yourself with an SLR! 🙂

I sued to use on before digital came in. I might just get my son one and let him do the photos.

Aww, thanks Kirsty! SLRs sure do great work compared to phones in some occasions, usually phones do just fine but I could not have captured these with any phone.

I couldn’t agree more, a good camera is a must, you can get away with a smartphone in some instances but honestly my photos haven’t looked better since getting my camera (a graduation present from the other half) and i’m so grateful for it 🙂

I agree on having a good camera to entice more readers. Aside from that, it makes the article more readable. I use my camera phone only in blogging. But how I wish I could afford a new dslr. But first, I need to study how to operate it so.I could maximize its use .

The 50mm is one of the best lenses you could have in your arsenal, I think, aside from the macro lens and telephoto lens. 🙂 Love those photos! My current DSLR has the 18-55mm standard lens (which is the very basic of all lenses haha) and I’ll be investing in a macro soon! 😀 Keep going at it and enjoy your new camera!

Thanks Olivia! I agree with you that basic 50mm is an excellent one. I’d love to have macro lens from Canon but it requires a bit saving to get one. I love macro photos! 🙂

This sure is! Very valuably price compared to quality. And because it’s Canon you have plenty of lens options available:)

Hi, Nora. I can see where you are going with this. That 50mm you have with f/1.8 is great for portraits. Now what you want to have next is a longer lens for general photography outdoors too. 🙂 For most people, this would be a zoom lens 70mm-200mm or 70mm-300mm 🙂 Nice camera you got there and yes, it will get the job done… oh wait! You need lights too… gosh, and the list goes on and on.

Haha! Yes you’ll never have it all. There is always a lens, or lighting system or tripod or something to add. 🙂 But I think that this camera offers me a good base on which I start getting new pieces and making the kit better. I’d love to get a macro one and tele one next.

What I use is my Nikon D90, iPhone 6S and sometimes I use my boyfriend’s Huawei P9. All are great cameras for high quality photos. Most of the time I use my iPhone since bringing my D90 would be heavy and bulky especially if I attend events or other stuff. What I like about the Huawei P9 is that is has a Leica lens and really takes quality photos. I would like to experience having a mirrorless camera like the Fujifilm X-A2. 🙂

I’m a Nikon cam-user and I sometimes wish that its Canon. You know that feeling of always looking for what else I can do if I have this and that. Haha! But lately, I’ve saved up to buy new lens for my Nikon and I’m happy with it. Sometimes, I totally ignore the SLR and use camera phone instead coz they’re just too easy to operate and carry around. Anyway, you’re photos with your 50mm lens are too gorgeous! They’re all beautiful captures and good motivators to blog. Nice blogsite, too!

Thanks for your nice comment Adel! I’m clad you like the photos and the blog. And hey, don’t worry. Nikon does some excellent cameras too. For me, after 10 years after shooting only Canons and iPhones using Nikon would be super unnatural but when I look at the specs they aren’t that bad. Enjoy your camera! 🙂

I agree that getting a good camera is important in terms of blogging. After all some are more receptive to good pictures than good writing and vice versa. Those are nice picture BTW. I really like the style where you can focus on one subject and have the surrounding a bit blurred but still with the idea of what is in the background.

Clad you like the photos! I was actually very thrilled how good photos this kit does compared to my old one. 🙂 And yes, it’s true others are here more for photos and others more for text. I think those elements should complement each other. In general having good content is the key to keep your readers coming back. 🙂

I have been wanting to have an SLR since I started blogging and I still want one until now. I’m using Nikon Coolpix S9300 for almost 5 years now and it’s still doing a great job. Thinking about upgrading too but maybe when my little one is a little older already because snapping photos while having a toddler around makes SLR not a good choice for me.

Well, SLRs are really easy to use and if the toddler keeps you busy you can always shoot in auto mode. 😉 But yeah, got your point!
