Brand Board: An Excellent Tool for Site or Blog planning

Posted by

Brand board is an excellent tool to plan and organize the new style for your website or blog. It’s visual document that contains the elements you want your site or blog to include. The brand board can include photos, colors, fonts and logos that represent your personal brand.

How the Brand Board Can Help You?

Do you know exactly which color and font to use for your copyright text so that they match with your page? Is your brand clearly recognizable? Are all it’s socials recognizable and solid too? Do you have a clear vision about the style of your site or blog?

If you answered yes all of these, congratulations! You’re doing great already! If you had one or more no answers this post will resolve your issues so keep reading because doing a brand board can make your more organized, make your blog and social look fresh, recognizable, solid and professional. It will also help you find a more clear vision.

Where to Begin?

Start thinking, what kind of pages you like the most. Think what you like about those. Analyze especially pages that are having similar topics to yours (comparing a fashion blog and coding company’s page might not be the best idea). What you like in your page? What you don’t like so much? Is that the feeling? Colors? Menus? Writing style? Size of the photos? Name?

List things you enjoy the most at those pages. After doing so think which of those concepts you could adapt to your page. Do another list that includes things you would a) like to change or remove, b) keep and c) add to your page.

Start thinking what you want your page to represent. Do you want it to be fashionable and modern? Do you want to make people to take some kind of action (travel, eat vegan, slow down, etc)? Is your goal to sell something (what and to whom)? Always keep your reader in mind. Think what they’re looking for and how your page fits to their need and ideas.

Start visualizing your ideas. You might want to do some Googling colors and fonts and what they symbolize. You might want to choose some photos that represent the feelings you want to forward to your readers. Or you just choose some colors and picture you enjoy and start with them. Do whichever works best for you.

What Should the Brand Board Include?

  1. Main Colors

Choose 2-4 main colors, which you will use for the biggest elements of your page. These main colors will be used for things like background, sidebar and fonts.

  1. Supporting Colors

Choose 2-5 supporting colors that you’ll use for thinks like links, copyright texts and smaller details.

  1. Fonts

Decide 1-3 fonts that will be used in your page. If you choose more than one make sure they look good together. You might want to use something more artistic for headers but keep in mind that your readers should be able to enjoy your content without issues with recognizing the letters. So keep it simple.

  1. Patterns

If you want to use pattern (zigzag, dots, stripes, etc.) it’s a good idea to include them to your brand board.

  1. Logo (and it’s variations)

After thinking what you want your page to look like it’s a good time to design a logo for it. I recommend you using colors and fonts that you will use in your page too. What comes to logos in general: keep it simple!

+ Some Inspiring Photos

Especially if you are very visual thinker including some inspiring photos is great. Choose ones that have colors and ideas you want your page to represent. These can work as reminders of what feelings you want to transfer to your reader.

My Brand Board:

My brand board includes three photos, which inspire me. I want this blog to make you and me smile and I want to bring some sunshine and color to your lives. The themes of this blog are also transferred via those photos: Travel, Lifestyle, Style and Welness.

The Brand Board also includes the colors and fonts I will be using. The bigger circles represent the main colors and the smaller ones supporting colors. I include the exact numbers of those colors witch makes it easier use exactly those ones.

After choosing photos, colors and fonts I started creating a logo based on those choices. I designed blog that’s simple but beautiful and can easily be connected to my brand board, blog and other social. I might have to do some variations of this in future but it’s fine to start with one or two versions of your logo.

  1. I love your tips! When it comes to my blog I would really love if everything was black and white, maybe with a touch of grey. I have a logo so to speak, but I feel like something is missing. When it comes to fonts, I am crazy about Times New Roman, but they say that not sheriff text is easy to read on the screen.

    1. I’m happy you enjoyed the tips! 🙂 Times is a nice font for essays and such. To me it reminds me too much of my school essays (it was mandatory to use times) but maybe it could work for someone less traumatized of overusing it haha! 🙂

    1. This tool helps you more with making the posts you do to have similar looks together. Maybe you should try bullet journaling first to get your posts done and then start to think about how they look? I’ll be writing about bullet journaling at the beginning of next week. I think that post would be more helpful for you Sabra! 🙂

  4. I hope I read this before planning for our blog. I didn’t think of coming up with a blog board. What I merely did was look on to sites that inspired me. Get what I liked then offered it to the web developer. I also didn’t choose our font. Anyway, I’m pretty sure those planning to start a blog will find this helpful.

    1. Well, I have redone the look of this blog twice by just thinking what looks good and nice for me. Both times it ended up looking fine. During this process I wanted to dig little further in the design and actually think what I want and why. I think this blog and it’s socials ended up looking better and recognizable this way. However as I said you can look good without this kind of tools. And as you told, you used a developer so sure he has thought things like fonts for you. 🙂

  5. This is something I desperately need to do for my blog. I am mid way through a redesign and I have a few changes that need to be made. Thanks for the tips, I’ll let you know how I get on. I am so indecisive so it’s going to be very hard to me to chose a colour theme and stick with it.

    1. Haha! Well, try thinking for who you write and about what. When you have clear image of your content and it’s readers it might be a bit easier to find the best colors for your blog. And remember you don’t have to stick in those forever. 🙂 I’m thinking that I’ll use this theme for 1-3 years and then move to self-hosted page that will get an entirely new look. Not because this one isn’t amazing but just because trends and colors I find the best might change over time. Cannot wait to see your new page! 🙂
